Taking Action after Affiliate Summit East 2010 to Grow Your Affiliate Business

John Chow, Murray Newlands & Heather Smith in the Affiliate Summit Blogger's Lounge

Affiliate Summit East 2010 was my first Affiliate Summit and my first time in New York City.  For weeks, I have excitedly looked forward to the conference and now that it’s finished, I’m at the airport waiting on the plane to take me home.  Both the conference and New York were awesome in that they were both bigger, but friendlier than I imagined.

In my mind, Affiliate Summit and New York would be scary places, but nothing could be further from the truth.  Being new to Affiliate Summit, hardly anyone knew me, so I had to make the extra effort to speak to new people and introduce myself.  Everyone was polite, but some people are just more comfortable talking with a stranger than other people.

I found New Yorkers were nothing but helpful when asking directions on how to get around on the subway and bus.  I expressed my surprise of the willingness of people to help me on the street to a native New Yorker at my table during an Affiliate Summit lunch.  He told me New Yorkers are friendly, but very busy trying to get somewhere.  Of necessity social interactions have to be quick, but he said to think of it as quality time, not quantity. For maybe up to 30 seconds, you can have their complete attention.

Shawn Collins in the “First Timers Guide for Affiliate Summit” session said you can literally meet hundreds if not thousands of people during conference and exchange business cards.  He stressed that introductions and conversations are often very brief, but it was important to follow up with people you want to do business with after the conference, preferably with a hand written note.

The Opening Remarks & Keynote, the presentations, the Meet Market, and Exhibit Hall Booths were all excellent but the networking was priceless.  As an Affiliate, how is all this going to change your business?  It won’t unless you apply what you learned or follow up with new contacts that can help you grow your business.  As Jim Kukral stressed in his Keynote speech, take action.

My good fortune continues with a free ticket to The Audience Conference

After receiving a complimentary Platinum Pass to Affiliate Summit East 2010, my good fortune continues with a free ticket to The Audience Conference.  A few days ago, I was working all night on my affiliate business, when I received a 3:00 am post in my google reader from the Affiliate Tip blog.  The blog post announced that the first ten people to register for The Audience Conference would receive a free ticket.

While reading the post, I was on IM with my Adoori account executive in Hong Kong, but I quickly entered my information and the promo code on the conference website, hoping to get a free ticket.  A few moments later, I excitedly opened the confirmation email which verified my receiving a free Audience Conference Attendee Pass.

The Audience Conference is being held on Saturday, one day before Affiliate Summit East 2010 opens in New York.  The venue is Carolines, a comedy night club, in the Times Square District.  It’s an all day event that mixes presentations from marketing experts with nationally know comics doing their stand up comedy routines.

What does marketing and comedy have in common?  Good marketers and comics must know their audience to be successful.  The conference is designed to stimulate the attendees to gain new insights to their marketing efforts, encourage networking in a smaller venue and just have a good time.  It should be an excellent lead in event before the much larger Affiliate Summit.

I am going to Affiliate Summit East 2010 in New York!

Today, I received an email that my application to the Affiliate Summit “Pay it Forward Scholarship” Program was awarded a complimentary Platinum Pass to the upcoming show in New York, August 15-17, 2010 at Hilton New York.

The goal of the scholarships is to make the education and networking experience of Affiliate Summit available to affiliates who might not otherwise be able to attend.

This scholarship award could not have come at a better time for me. Recently, I put my affiliate marketing on hold after starting a part-time job on 3rd shift. Adjusting to the work hours was difficult at first, but I am becoming more accustomed to them.

My last ppv campaign was modestly profitable only because I focused on this one campaign in one niche for about 4 months to increase my knowledge of ppv. It took a lot of time to manage and campaign conversions dropped off, so I finally pulled the plug.

So over the past few weeks, I have been thinking about the direction my affiliate marketing and came to the following conclusions:

1) Start a blog to share my affiliate marketing experiences and to network with other affiliate marketers.

2) Learn to quickly launch and test new campaigns.

Anyway, a big thanks to Shawn Collins and Missy Ward for my complimentary Platinum Pass to Affiliate Summit 2010 – New York.
